The surah's big idea

Asking forgiveness opens doors of mercy and provision, and Noah kept calling night and day

What did I learn from the surah?

  1. 1. Warn your people
Allah sent Noah, peace be upon him, to his people to warn them before a painful punishment came. He said: my people, I am a clear warner to you: worship Allah, fear Him and obey me, and He will forgive your sins and give you time until a set term.
  2. 2. Night and day
Noah said: my Lord, I called my people night and day, but my calling only made them run away more. Each time I called them so that You would forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their clothes, insisted and were proud.
  3. 3. Ask your Lord's forgiveness
Then I called them openly in front of everyone, then I spoke to them sometimes aloud and sometimes in secret, and I said: ask your Lord for forgiveness; He is always ready to forgive whoever repents and returns to Him.
  4. 4. Rain and gardens
If you ask forgiveness, Allah will send down plenty of rain on you, one shower after another, give you more wealth and children, and give you gardens and rivers.
  5. 5. The sun is a lamp
What is wrong with you that you do not honour Allah's greatness, when He created you stage after stage? Do you not see how Allah created seven heavens one above another, made the moon a light in them, and made the sun a shining lamp?
  6. 6. The earth is a carpet
Allah made you grow from the earth as plants grow, then He returns you into it after death, then He brings you out on the Day of Resurrection. And He spread the earth for you like a carpet, so that you may walk along its wide roads.
  7. 7. Never leave your gods
Noah said: my Lord, my people disobeyed me and followed the rich whose wealth only brought them loss. They plotted a great plot and said: never leave your idols Wadd, Suwa', Yaghuth, Ya'uq and Nasr. And they led many astray.
  8. 8. They were drowned
Because of their sins and their insisting on disbelief, they were drowned in the flood and then put into the Fire, and they found no one besides Allah to help them.
  9. 9. My Lord, forgive me and my parents
Noah said: my Lord, do not leave a single disbeliever on the earth, for they lead Your servants astray. My Lord, forgive me and my parents, and whoever enters my house as a believer, and the believing men and women.
