The surah's big idea

We are all heading to Allah; happy is the one given his book in his right hand

What did I learn from the surah?

  1. 1. When the sky splits open
On the Last Day the sky will split open, obeying its Lord, as it must. The earth will be stretched out flat, cast out the dead inside it, and obey its Lord too.
  2. 2. You are striving toward your Lord
O man, you are working hard through your life, doing good or bad, and then you will meet Allah on the Last Day, who will reward you for your deeds.
  3. 3. An easy reckoning
As for the one who is given his book of deeds in his right hand, believing in his Lord, he will have an easy reckoning, and return happily to his people in Paradise.
  4. 4. Behind his back
But the one who is given his book of deeds from behind his back, the one who disbelieved in Allah, will cry out for ruin, and enter the Blaze to suffer its heat.
  5. 5. His Lord always saw him
In this world he was among his people, cheerful and careless, never thinking of the end, and he thought he would never return to his Lord. Yes, he will, for Allah always saw him and knew all about him.
  6. 6. Stage after stage
Allah swears by the red glow of sunset, by the night and all it gathers, and by the moon when it is full: you will surely pass through stage after stage, from creation to death to being raised again.
  7. 7. They do not prostrate
So what keeps them from believing after the signs became clear? And when the Quran is recited to them they do not prostrate to Allah. Instead the disbelievers deny, and Allah knows best what they hide in their chests.
  8. 8. A reward that never ends
So give them news of a painful punishment, O Prophet, peace be upon him, except those who believe and do good deeds: for them is a reward in the Hereafter that never stops and never shrinks.
