The surah's big idea

Read and learn; Allah sees everything we do

What did I learn from the surah?

  1. 1. Read in the name of your Lord
These are the first verses of the Quran ever revealed: Read, O Prophet, peace be upon him, beginning with the name of your Lord who created everything, and created man from a tiny clinging clot.
  2. 2. He taught by the pen
Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous, full of giving and goodness. He taught people to write with the pen, and taught man what he did not know.
  3. 3. To your Lord is the return
Truly, man oversteps his limits and grows proud when he sees himself rich and in need of no one. But everyone will return to Allah, and He will reward each person for what he did.
  4. 4. Stopping a servant from praying
Isn't it strange: an unjust man, Abu Jahl, tries to stop one of Allah's servants, the Prophet, peace be upon him, from praying. How can he stop him, when he is rightly guided and tells people to be mindful of Allah?
  5. 5. Does he not know that Allah sees?
And if this man denies the truth and turns away from it, does he not know that Allah sees everything he does?
  6. 6. His friends cannot help him
No! If he does not stop his harm, We will seize him by the front of his head, for he is lying in what he says and sinful in what he does. Let him call his friends to help him; Allah will call the angels of punishment.
  7. 7. Prostrate and draw near
No! Do not obey him, O Prophet, peace be upon him, in leaving the prayer. Prostrate to your Lord and draw near to Him by obeying Him.
