The lessons

  1. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mulk: a wide calm valley at sunrise with green fields, a river and soft hills, morning light spreading over everything
    1 · Verses 1–2

    Blessed is Allah

Allah's goodness and blessing are great. In His hand is the dominion of everything, and He can do all things. He created death and life to test us: which of us does the best deeds. He is the Mighty, the Forgiving to those who repent.

  2. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mulk: a brass telescope on a wooden stand on a quiet hilltop, pointing at a clear deep blue evening sky with the first stars
    2 · Verses 3–4

    Look at the sky

Allah created seven heavens, one above another. You will not see any fault in the creation of the Most Merciful. Look at the sky again and again: do you see any crack? Your sight will come back tired, having found no flaw.

  3. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mulk: a night sky full of bright twinkling stars above dark quiet hills, with one shooting star streaking across in a soft curve
    3 · Verse 5

    The lamps of the sky

Allah decorated the nearest sky with shining stars, and made from them shooting stars that are thrown at the devils who try to listen in secret. And He has prepared for them the punishment of the Fire in the Hereafter.

  4. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mulk: a heavy shut iron gate set in dark rocky cliffs at dusk, a faint orange glow behind it, a small brass warning bell hanging beside it
    4 · Verses 6–8

    Did no warner come?

For those who disbelieve in their Lord is the punishment of Hell, a terrible end. When they are thrown in, they hear its dreadful sound as it boils, almost bursting with rage. Each time a group is thrown in, its keepers ask: did no messenger come to warn you?

  5. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mulk: a large spiral seashell resting on a stone by a shut wooden door in the evening, the doorway dark and quiet
    5 · Verses 9–11

    If only we had listened

They say: yes, a messenger came to us, but we denied him and said Allah sent down nothing. And they say: if only we had listened to the truth or thought about it, we would not be among the people of the Fire. So they admit their sin when admitting no longer helps.

  6. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mulk: a quiet room at night with a prayer rug on the floor, softly lit by one small oil lamp, the window showing a dark starry sky
    6 · Verses 12–14

    Allah knows the secret

Those who fear their Lord when no one sees them will have forgiveness and a great reward. Hide your words or say them aloud: Allah knows what is in the hearts. Does the One who created not know? He is the Subtle, the All-Aware.

  7. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mulk: winding dirt paths through gentle green fields and orchards full of fruit trees, a small stream, soft morning light
    7 · Verse 15

    Walk across the earth

Allah made the earth easy for you to walk on, so walk along its paths and slopes, and eat from the provision He brings out of it for you. And to Him you will return on the Day of Resurrection.

  8. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mulk: a wind storm sweeping sand and small pebbles across an empty rocky desert plain under heavy grey clouds, broken ancient stone columns in the distance
    8 · Verses 16–18

    Do you feel safe?

Do you feel safe that Allah will not make the earth shake beneath you, or send against you a wind carrying small stones? You will come to know how true His warning is. Those before them denied their messengers, and how severe was Allah's punishment!

  9. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mulk: several birds gliding high in a bright blue sky, some with wings spread wide and some with wings folded, soft white clouds
    9 · Verse 19

    The birds above them

Have they not looked at the birds above them, spreading their wings and folding them in as they fly? None holds them up in the air except the Most Merciful. He sees all things.

  10. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mulk: a woven basket full of fresh round bread, dates and fruit on a wooden table beside a sunny window
    10 · Verses 20–21

    Who provides for you?

Who could help you other than the Most Merciful? And who could provide for you if Allah held back His provision? No one. But the disbelievers kept on being stubborn and turning away from the truth.

  11. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mulk: two paths from the same spot, one straight smooth path lit by sunshine leading up a green hill, the other twisting into dark tangled thorny bushes
    11 · Verse 22

    The straight path

Is the one who walks stumbling on his face, not knowing where he goes, better guided, or the one who walks upright on a clear straight path? This is an example of the disbeliever and the believer.

  12. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mulk: an open window at sunrise with a small songbird singing on the sill, a view of green hills and sky beyond
    12 · Verses 23–24

    Hearing, sight and hearts

Say: Allah is the One who created you and gave you hearing, sight and hearts, yet little do you give thanks. He is the One who spread you across the earth, and to Him you will be gathered.

  13. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mulk: a large hourglass on a stone ledge at dusk, the sand half run through, a lighthouse shining far away over a calm sea
    13 · Verses 25–27

    When is this promise?

The disbelievers say: when will the Day of Resurrection come, if you are truthful? Say: its knowledge is with Allah alone, and I am only a clear warner. When they see the punishment near, sadness shows on their faces.

  14. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mulk: a clear spring flowing out between mossy rocks into a sparkling stream through green grass and wildflowers, sunlight on the water
    14 · Verses 28–30

    Flowing water

Say: who will protect the disbelievers from punishment? Say: He is the Most Merciful; we believe in Him and rely on Him. Say: have you thought, if your water sank deep into the earth, who other than Allah could bring you flowing water?
