The lessons

  1. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Haqqah: a wide calm desert at dawn under a deep blue sky, one bright line of golden light along the horizon
    1 · Verses 1–3

    The Sure Reality

Al-Haqqah is the Day of Resurrection, the day that will surely come, with no doubt. What is the Sure Reality? And what will make you know, O Muhammad, peace be upon him, how true and how great it is?

  2. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Haqqah: hollow fallen palm trunks lying on wind-blown sand in an empty desert, swirling sand in a strong wind
    2 · Verses 4–8

    Thamud and Aad

Thamud, the people of Salih, and Aad, the people of Hud, denied the Day. Thamud were destroyed by a terrible blast, and Aad by a cold, violent wind that Allah sent on them for seven nights and eight days in a row, until they lay like hollow fallen palm trunks. Do you see any of them left?

  3. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Haqqah: fallen sandstone blocks and broken square columns of an ancient ruined palace on a riverbank beside tall palms, a calm wide river, grey sky
    3 · Verses 9–10

    Pharaoh and the overturned towns

Pharaoh came, and the disbelieving nations before him, and the people of Lut's towns, which were turned upside down because of their disbelief and their ugly deeds. They disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so Allah seized them with a mighty grip.

  4. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Haqqah: a large wooden ark sailing safely on high rolling waves under rain clouds, a break of sunlight in the sky
    4 · Verses 11–12

We carried you in the ship

When the water rose high above everything, Allah carried your forefathers with Noah, peace be upon him, in the ship that sailed on the water, to make the saving of the believers and the drowning of the disbelievers a lesson that every listening ear keeps and understands.

  5. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Haqqah: a vast flat plain where the mountains have been levelled to fine drifting dust, a pale quiet sky with a thin crack of soft light
    5 · Verses 13–18

    A single blast

When the Horn is blown a single blast, and the earth and the mountains are lifted and crushed with one blow, on that Day the Event will happen. The sky will split open and be frail that Day, the angels at its edges, and eight will carry the Throne of your Lord above them. That Day you will be shown before Allah; nothing of yours will be hidden.

  6. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Haqqah: a rolled scroll tied with a green ribbon resting on soft grass beneath fruit trees whose fruit hangs low, a gentle stream, warm light
    6 · Verses 19–24

    Here, read my book

As for the one given his book of deeds in his right hand, he says with joy: Here, read my book! I was sure I would meet my account. He will be in a pleasing life, in a lofty garden whose fruit hangs near. It will be said: Eat and drink happily for the good you sent ahead in the days gone by.

  7. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Haqqah: an empty open wooden treasure chest lying in grey dust with a few plain dull coins scattered, a wilted plant, overcast sky
    7 · Verses 25–29

My wealth did not help me

As for the one given his book in his left hand, he says with regret: If only I had not been given my book, and had never known my account! If only death had been the end! My wealth has not helped me, and my power and my excuses are gone.

  8. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Haqqah: a basket of fresh bread and dates set down beside a simple wooden door of a flat-roofed mud-brick house, warm morning light
    8 · Verses 30–37

    Feeding the needy

It will be said to the keepers of Hell: Seize him and bind him, then let him enter the Blaze, then bind him in a chain seventy cubits long; for he did not believe in Allah the Most Great, and did not urge people to feed the needy. So he has no close friend there today, and no food except the discharge of the people of the Fire, which only the sinners eat.

  9. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Haqqah: a closed book on a carved wooden stand by an arched window, sunrise outside on one side and a starry sky fading on the other, soft light on the book
    9 · Verses 38–43

Sent down from the Lord of the worlds

Allah swears by what you see and what you do not see: the Quran is the word of Allah recited by a noble messenger. It is not the words of a poet; how little you believe! Nor the words of a fortune-teller; how little you reflect! It is sent down from the Lord of the worlds.

  10. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Haqqah: a glowing lantern lighting a stone path at night that leads to a mosque with a dome topped by a golden crescent and a slender minaret
    10 · Verses 44–52

Glorify the name of your Lord

Had Muhammad, peace be upon him, made up any words against Us, We would have seized him with strength, and none of you could have stopped Us. The Quran is a reminder for the God-fearing. Allah knows some of you deny it; it will be a regret for the disbelievers, and it is the certain truth. So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
