The lessons

  1. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Jinn: a quiet desert valley at night under a starry sky, soft swirls of silvery wind and glowing light curling around a single lit lantern on a rock
    1 · Verses 1–2

    An amazing Quran

Say, O Messenger: Allah has revealed to me that a group of jinn listened to the Quran and said to their people: we have heard an amazing Quran that guides to the truth, so we believed in it, and we will never set up anyone as a partner with our Lord.

  2. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Jinn: a vast clear night sky full of stars over a quiet desert, one bright star shining above the dunes
    2 · Verses 3–5

    Exalted is our Lord

They said: exalted is the majesty of our Lord; He has taken neither a wife nor a son. Our foolish one, Iblis, used to say lies about Allah, and we thought that no human or jinn would ever lie about Allah.

  3. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Jinn: a sturdy flat-roofed Arabian stone house with one warm lit window on a windy night, dark palms bending in the wind while the house stands safe
    3 · Verses 6–7

    The true refuge

Some men among humans used to seek protection from men among the jinn, and they only made them more afraid. And the disbelievers thought, as you thought, that Allah would never raise anyone. Seeking protection from other than Allah is shirk.

  4. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Jinn: several bright shooting stars streaking across a deep night sky above a dark mountain ridge, stars twinkling
    4 · Verses 8–10

    Strong guards and flames

They said: we tried to reach the sky and found it filled with strong guards and burning flames. We used to sit there to listen in secret, but whoever listens now finds a flame waiting for him. And we do not know whether harm or good is meant for the people of the earth.

  5. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Jinn: a valley at dawn where several paths spread out in different directions, one path lit warmly by the rising sun leading up a green hill
    5 · Verses 11–13

    When we heard the guidance

They said: among us are the righteous and others who are not; we were groups going different ways. We are sure that we cannot escape Allah on earth or by running away. When we heard the guidance, we believed in it; whoever believes in his Lord fears no loss and no wrong.

  6. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Jinn: a wide river full of clear water flowing through green fields and palm groves at dawn, a waterfall pouring in from rocks
    6 · Verses 14–17

    Abundant water

Among us are Muslims and among us are wrongdoers; whoever submits has chosen the right path, and the wrongdoers are fuel for Hell. If people stayed upright on Islam, We would give them plenty of water to drink, to test them; and whoever turns away from his Lord's remembrance, He will put into a hard punishment.

  7. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Jinn: a simple Arabian mosque with a white dome topped by a small golden crescent and a slender minaret, its arched door open, palms, soft morning light
    7 · Verses 18–19

    The mosques are for Allah

The mosques are for worshipping Allah alone, so do not call on anyone with Allah in them. And when Muhammad, peace be upon him, stood to worship his Lord, the jinn almost crowded around him to hear the Quran.

  8. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Jinn: a lighthouse shining its beam steadily across a dark stormy sea at night, the waves calm close to its rocky base
    8 · Verses 20–24

I only call on my Lord

Say: I only call on my Lord and set up no partner with Him. I have no power to harm you or to guide you. No one can protect me from Allah, and I find no refuge except Him; I only deliver His message. Whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger will have the Fire of Hell.

  9. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Jinn: rolling golden sand dunes stretching far under a sky full of countless stars, tiny grains of sand glittering in the moonlight
    9 · Verses 25–28

    Knower of the unseen

Say: I do not know whether what you are promised is near or far. Allah is the Knower of the unseen; He shows it to no one except a messenger He chooses, and He guards His message with angels. He surrounds everything with His knowledge and has counted everything.

Why Surah Al-Jinn was revealed

The story as it comes in the sound hadith, in simple words for children.

The Prophet ﷺ set out with some of his companions, and on the way he led them in the dawn prayer and recited the Quran. A group of jinn nearby heard the recitation, listened, and were amazed by it, then went back to their people to tell them. So Allah sent down to His Prophet the opening of this surah: «Say: it has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened».
