    1 · Verses 1–4

    Stand at night

O Prophet, you who wrap yourself in your clothes, stand at night in prayer except a little: half of it, a little less, or a little more. And recite the Quran slowly and clearly, letter by letter.

  2. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muzzammil: a quiet old Arabian town of flat-roofed mud-brick houses under a starry night sky, every window dark except one small softly glowing window
    2 · Verses 5–7

    A weighty word

O Prophet, We will send down to you a great Quran full of commands and rulings. Worship at night touches the heart more deeply, because the heart is free from the day's busy work, and in the day you have much to do.

  3. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muzzammil: a long sandy desert track crossing a wide golden plain from the rising sun on one horizon toward soft hills on the other, a few palms along the way
    3 · Verses 8–9

Remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him fully in your worship. He is the Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but Him, so rely on Him in all your affairs.

    4 · Verses 10–11

  5. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muzzammil: a tall rocky mountain crumbling into pouring streams of sand under a dim pale sky, an empty plain below
    5 · Verses 12–14

    The Day the earth shakes

With Allah, for the deniers in the Hereafter, are heavy shackles and a Fire, food that sticks in the throat, and a painful punishment. That is on the Day the earth and the mountains shake, and the mountains become heaps of scattered sand.

  6. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muzzammil: an abandoned ancient Egyptian temple with thick plain stone columns and a tall obelisk beside a calm sea, sand drifting across its empty steps
    6 · Verses 15–16

    As We sent to Pharaoh

We sent to you, people of Makkah, Muhammad, peace be upon him, as a messenger and a witness over you, just as We sent Moses, peace be upon him, to Pharaoh. Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We destroyed him severely.

  7. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muzzammil: a row of glowing lanterns lining a path through a dark valley, leading toward the first light of dawn on the horizon
    7 · Verses 17–19

    This is a reminder

If you disbelieve, how will you protect yourselves from a Day so hard that it turns children's hair white? The sky will split apart on it, and Allah's promise will surely come. These verses are a reminder, so whoever wills may take a path to his Lord.

  8. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muzzammil: a prayer rug at dawn beside a small wooden charity box and a bowl of dates, early pink light through a window
    8 · Verse 20

    What is easy

Your Lord knows you stand less than two thirds of the night, sometimes half, sometimes a third, with a group of your companions. He knew you could not stand all of it, so He made it lighter for you. So recite what is easy of the Quran, pray, give zakat, and ask Allah's forgiveness.

Why verse 20 of Surah Al-Muzzammil was revealed

The story as it comes in the sound hadith, in simple words for children.

When the start of the surah came down, «Stand in prayer at night, except a little», the Prophet ﷺ and his companions stood in night prayer until their feet swelled, and this went on for about a year. Then Allah sent down the last verse of the surah and made it easier for them: night prayer became voluntary after it had been obligatory.
