The lessons

  1. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muddaththir: fresh clean white clothes hanging on a line in bright morning sunshine on a flat rooftop, blue sky and a few palm trees
    1 · Verses 1–7

    Arise and warn

O Prophet, you who wrap yourself in your clothes, arise and warn the people, glorify your Lord alone, purify your clothes, stay away from idols, do not give in order to get more back, and be patient for your Lord.

  2. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muddaththir: an empty wide plain at pale dawn with soft rays of light spreading across the sky, quiet and still
    2 · Verses 8–10

    A hard Day

When the horn is blown for the Resurrection, that will be a hard Day for the disbelievers, not easy.

  3. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muddaththir: a grand old Arabian house with high mud-brick walls, palms and a large garden behind closed wooden gates, under a heavy grey sky, empty and silent
    3 · Verses 11–17

Leave Me with the one I created alone

Leave Me with the one I created alone in his mother's womb. I gave him much wealth, sons present with him, and an easy life, yet he wants Me to give him more. No! He was stubborn against Our verses; I will make him face a hard punishment.

  4. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muddaththir: a tangled knotted ball of grey yarn lying on a dark stone floor, loose threads twisting in all directions
    4 · Verses 18–25

    He thought and plotted

He thought and prepared what to say to attack the Quran; may he be ruined for how he planned! Then he looked, then frowned and scowled, then turned away in pride and said: this is nothing but magic passed down; this is only the word of a human.

  5. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muddaththir: a deep dark rocky canyon at night with a faint red glow far below, heavy smoke clouds drifting above it
    5 · Verses 26–30

    Saqar

I will put him into Saqar. And what will make you know what Saqar is? A Fire that leaves nothing and spares nothing, burning and blackening the skin; over it are nineteen angels.

  6. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muddaththir: countless bright stars filling a vast night sky over a silent desert, a faint band of the milky way across it
    6 · Verse 31

    The soldiers of your Lord

We made the keepers of the Fire angels, and made their number a test for the disbelievers, so that the People of the Book become certain and the believers grow in faith. None knows the soldiers of your Lord but Him, and the Fire is only a reminder for people.

  7. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muddaththir: a pale moon fading in the sky as morning light brightens over quiet hills, the night's blue giving way to gold
    7 · Verses 32–37

By the morning when it brightens

No! Allah swears by the moon, by the night as it leaves, and by the morning as it shines: the Fire is one of the gravest of all things, a warning to people, for whoever of you wants to move forward with obedience or fall behind with sin.

  8. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muddaththir: a peaceful green garden with flowing streams and fruit trees, a stone path winding through it, soft light
    8 · Verses 38–42

    The companions of the right

Every soul is held by what it has earned, except the companions of the right; in gardens they will ask one another about the criminals: what put you into Saqar?

  9. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muddaththir: a plain rolled-up prayer rug left in a dusty corner beside an untouched covered bowl of food and a closed wooden door, dim evening light
    9 · Verses 43–47

We were not of those who prayed

They said: we were not of those who prayed, nor did we feed the poor; we used to join in idle false talk with those who did, and we denied the Day of Judgement, until death came to us.

  10. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muddaththir: a herd of wild donkeys galloping away in a cloud of dust across a dry plain, a lion standing far behind them on a rock
    10 · Verses 48–51

    Fleeing from a lion

So the intercession of intercessors will not help them. What is wrong with them, turning away from the reminder, as if they were frightened wild donkeys fleeing from a lion?

  11. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Muddaththir: a lantern glowing on a windowsill at dawn with soft morning light flowing in over a quiet garden outside
    11 · Verses 52–56

    Worthy of fear and forgiveness

Each of them wants open pages sent down to him. No! They do not fear the Hereafter. No! The Quran is a reminder, so whoever wills will remember it, and they will not remember unless Allah wills. He is worthy to be feared and worthy to forgive.

Why verses 1–5 of Surah Al-Muddaththir were revealed

The story as it comes in the sound hadith, in simple words for children.

After the first verses of the Quran came down in the cave of Hira, revelation paused for a while. One day the Prophet ﷺ was walking when he heard a voice from the sky; he looked up and saw the angel who had come to him in Hira sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth. He was frightened, went home and said: cover me, cover me. Then Allah sent down «O you wrapped in your cloak, arise and warn», and after that revelation came regularly.
