The lessons

  1. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mursalat: soft clouds drifting fast across a wide sky over a field of tall bending grass, swirls of wind, light breaking through
    1 · Verses 1–7

    By the winds sent forth

Allah swears by the winds that blow one after another, by the strong winds, by the angels who drive the clouds, by the angels who bring down what separates truth from falsehood, and by the angels who bring the revelation to the prophets, so that no one is left with an excuse, and as a warning: what you are promised of the Day will surely happen.

  2. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mursalat: mountains dissolving into drifting dust under a dim violet sky where the stars are fading out, quiet empty land
    2 · Verses 8–15

    The Day of Decision

When the stars lose their light, the sky splits open, the mountains are blown away as dust, and the messengers' appointed time comes. For which day was it set? For the Day of Decision between all creation. And what will make you know what the Day of Decision is? Woe that Day to the deniers: ruin and punishment for them.

  3. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mursalat: the empty ruins of an ancient stone town in a desert valley, broken walls and doorways, long evening shadows
    3 · Verses 16–19

Did We not destroy the earlier ones?

Did Allah not destroy the earlier nations when they denied the messengers, like the people of Noah, Aad and Thamud? Then He makes those after them who deny follow them. That is how Allah deals with the wrongdoers. Woe that Day to the deniers.

  4. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mursalat: a single clear drop of water resting safely inside a smooth open seashell on soft sand, gentle light
    4 · Verses 20–24

    From a humble fluid

Did Allah not create you from a weak fluid, which He placed in a safe, protected place inside the mother until a time He knows? He shaped and formed it, and how excellent He is in His power! Woe that Day to the deniers.

  5. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mursalat: tall firm mountains with a fresh clear spring flowing down into a green valley with palm trees, bright day
    5 · Verses 25–28

    Sweet fresh water

Did Allah not make the earth hold the living on its back and the dead within it, place firm, tall mountains on it, and give you sweet water to drink? Woe that Day to the deniers.

  6. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mursalat: three thin columns of grey smoke rising from a dark distant canyon under a hot hazy sky, a bare dry plain, no trees
    6 · Verses 29–34

A shade that gives no shade

It will be said to the deniers that Day: Go to the Fire you used to deny! Go to a shade of its smoke splitting into three columns, giving no shade and no protection from the flame. It throws sparks as huge as castles, like yellowish camels. Woe that Day to the deniers.

  7. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mursalat: a silent empty desert plain under a heavy grey sky, one closed wooden door standing alone in the sand
    7 · Verses 35–40

A Day they will not speak

This is a Day the deniers will not speak words that help them, nor be allowed to make excuses. Woe that Day to the deniers. This is the Day of Decision; Allah has gathered you with those of old. If you have a plan, then try it. Woe that Day to the deniers.

  8. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mursalat: a peaceful garden of broad shady trees beside flowing springs, branches heavy with fruit, dappled golden light
    8 · Verses 41–45

    In shades and springs

The God-fearing will be among shading trees and flowing springs, and fruits of whatever they desire. It will be said to them: Eat and drink happily for what you used to do. That is how We reward those who do good. Woe that Day to the deniers.

  9. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Mursalat: a plain prayer rug with no pattern laid in a quiet empty mosque at dawn, light coming through an arched window
    9 · Verses 46–50

In what message after this will they believe?

It is said to the deniers as a warning: Eat and enjoy yourselves a little in this world; you are wrongdoers. Woe that Day to the deniers. When they are told: Bow down and pray to Allah, they do not bow. Woe that Day to the deniers. If they do not believe in this Quran, then in what message after it will they believe?
