The lessons
1 · Verses 1–5By the dawn and ten nights
Allah swears by the dawn, by the first ten nights of Dhul-Hijjah, by the even and the odd, and by the night as it passes. Is that not enough for anyone who thinks?
2 · Verses 6–8Iram of the pillars
Have you not seen, O Prophet, peace be upon him, what your Lord did with the people of 'Aad, the tribe of Iram, so strong, with buildings raised on tall pillars, the like of which were never made in any land?
3 · Verses 9–10Thamud and Pharaoh
And with Thamud, the people of Salih, peace be upon him, who carved homes out of the rock in the valley? And with Pharaoh, king of Egypt, owner of the armies that held up his rule?
4 · Verses 11–14Your Lord is ever watchful
They all transgressed in the lands and spread much corruption there, so your Lord poured a severe punishment upon them. Your Lord, O Prophet, peace be upon him, is ever watchful over those who disobey Him.
5 · Verses 15–16My Lord has honoured me
As for man, when his Lord tests him with blessings and gives him plenty, he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' And when He tests him by giving him less, he says, 'My Lord has humiliated me.'
6 · Verses 17–20You do not honour the orphan
No! It is not as he thinks; honour comes from obeying Allah. But you do not honour the orphan, you do not urge one another to feed the poor, you devour other people's inheritance, and you love wealth with a great love.
7 · Verses 21–23Pounded and crushed
No! When the earth is pounded and crushed, and your Lord comes to judge between His creation, with the angels in rows upon rows, and Hell is brought near that Day, then man will remember, but what good will remembering do him then?
8 · Verses 24–26If only I had sent ahead for my life
He will say, 'If only I had sent ahead good deeds for my real life!' On that Day no one punishes like His punishment, and no one binds like His binding.
9 · Verses 27–30The soul at peace
O soul at peace with the remembrance of Allah and faith in Him, return to your Lord, pleased with the honour He gave you, and He is pleased with you. Enter among My good servants, and enter My Paradise.
