The lessons

  1. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Layl: a starry night sky on one side and bright day on the other, above two paths starting from the same old tree and winding away in different directions
    1 · Verses 1–4

    Your efforts differ

Allah swears by the night when it covers the earth with darkness, by the day when it shines, and by His creating male and female: your deeds differ. Some work only for this world, and some work for the Hereafter.

  2. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Layl: a smooth sunny path through a flowering meadow, a basket of bread and fruit set down beside a little wooden doorway along the way
    2 · Verses 5–7

    We will ease his way

As for the one who gives from his wealth, is mindful of Allah, and believes in the best reward, Allah will make the way of good easy for him and smooth his affairs.

  3. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Layl: a locked treasure chest full of coins left alone on a steep cracked rocky slope that drops into a dark valley, dusk sky
    3 · Verses 8–11

    What use is his wealth?

But the one who is stingy with his wealth, thinks he does not need his Lord and denies the best reward, his way leads to misery. And the wealth he held back will not help him when he falls into the Fire.

  4. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Layl: a fork in a road at dawn, one path lit by a line of glowing lanterns leading to a green garden gate, the other fading into grey mist
    4 · Verses 12–13

    Guidance is from Us

Allah shows us the path of guidance that leads to Him and to Paradise, and makes it clear from the wrong path. And to Allah alone belong the Hereafter and this world.

  5. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Layl: a sturdy wooden fence along a cliff edge at dusk, a faint orange glow rising from far below, a safe green path leading away from the edge
    5 · Verses 14–16

    A blazing Fire

So I have warned you, people, of a blazing Fire. Only the most wretched will enter it: the one who denied the truth and turned away.

  6. Paper-cut picture from Surah Al-Layl: a small cloth bag of coins quietly left at the gate of a humble house at dawn, beyond the gate a garden of flowers blooming under a golden sky
    6 · Verses 17–21

    He will be well pleased

The most mindful will be kept far from it: the one who gives his wealth to purify himself, not to repay a favour anyone did him, but only seeking the face of his Lord Most High. And he will be given in Paradise until he is well pleased.
